On August 7, Seoul’s Nowon-gu District 노원구 recorded a temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius (104.36 degrees Fahrenheit), one of the highest temperatures observed in the city since modern weather recordings began. Temperatures in Seoul outpaced highs in Southeast Asian cities such as Bangkok and Manila this week.
Every day so far in August, more than 100 persons visited emergency rooms for heat stroke, and four deaths have been reported. All pro baseball games from August 5 to 6 were canceled, after a spectator was hospitalized due to the heat at the August 4 SSG Landers versus LG Twins game in Seoul. More than 190k farmed fish and 80k farm animals perished in the heat.
