According to a July 16 report by the Ministry of Data and Statistics 국가데이터처, marriage often is the moment when the young South Koreans decide to move to the area surrounding Seoul. An in-depth study of the 244k newlyweds in their early 30s found that Gyeonggi-do Province 경기도 gained 3.2% in population between before and after marriage, leading all jurisdictions. In contrast, Seoul 서울 lost 2.6% of the same demographic before and after marriage.
Overall, 57.1% of the newlywed demographic relocated to a different city or town. Among them, 6.7% moved into the capital region 수도권 (i.e. Seoul, Incheon 인천 and Gyeonggi-do Province) from outside of the area, while 5.5% moved out of the capital region. The newlyweds who moved out of the capital region are more likely to own a home (24.3% to 23.6%) and have children (70.5% to 66.8%) in the first three years of their marriage relative to their peers who moved in the opposite direction.
