Sixteen percent of South Korean women suffered from physical and emotional violence from their spouse or significant other, according to the first official government report on violence against women.

The annual report, prepared by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family 여성가족부, is the first of its kind created pursuant to the Basic Act on Prevention of Violence Against Women 여성폭력방지기본법, which came into effect in 2019.

In a study conducted from September 22 to November 30, 2021 based on 7k adult women, 16.1% said they suffered at least one of emotional abuse (61.9% of reported violence), physical violence (52.5%), sexual violence (27.9%), controlling behavior (21.8%) or economic violence (10.5%). Disabled women (22.2%) and immigrant women (18.1%) were more frequently exposed to gendered violence.
