Prosecutors recommended two years in prison for North Korean defector and activist Park Sang-hak 박상학 for assault charges against journalists.
On June 26, Park had thrown bricks at SBS News journalists who visited his home for a comment regarding the government’s recent ban on sending propaganda leaflets to North Korea, a campaign primarily led by Park’s group Fighters for a Free North Korea 자유북한운동연합, then fired a gas-powered pepper spray on the police who responded to the scene. One of the journalists was hospitalized after suffering a concussion.
The court will sentence Park on August 12.
