An in-depth study by SisaIN 시사인 and Hankook Research 한국리서치 showed a disturbing tendency among South Korean conservatives to increasingly reject democracy. (See previous coverage, “The People Who Reject Democracy.”) A recent survey by the Hankyoreh 한겨레 found similar results.

In the Hankyoreh study, 76.9% of respondents said “democracy is always better than any other system,” while 13.9% said “dictatorship may be preferable, depending on the circumstances.” The latter proposition found support among only 5% of Democratic Party 민주당 supporters, as compared to the 23.7% of People Power Party 국민의힘 supporters who identified themselves as open to dictatorship.
