In the annual survey by the Korea Institute of National Unification 통일연구원, 51% of respondents said reunification with North Korea was no longer necessary - the first time a majority responded this way since KINU began the survey in 2014.

As recently as 2018, when inter-Korean relations were improving under the Moon Jae-in 문재인 administration, more than 70% of respondents to the survey said reunification was necessary. That figure has steadily declined over the past seven years, especially with the deterioration of inter-Korean relations under the Yoon Suk-yeol 윤석열 administration and the announcement from North Korea’s Kim Jong Un 김정은 regime that Pyongyang 평양 will no longer pursue reunification.
